Neals Landing

Historical note: This landing is right in sight of Highway 91 Bridge. At first this was a ferry landing, operated by Mr. Ward of Iron City. Then, in 1927, the ferry was replaced by the famous swinging bridge. Constructed of cables and wood, it was very scary when the cars and truck would go because it would buckle and sway.
In 1953, it was deemed unsafe and the present bridge was built. While the construction was going on, the swinging bridge was replaced by a ferry. It proved to be more dangerous than the bridge as two people died here and the ferry sank twice.
Also, there have been several steamboat wrecks here in days gone by. The General Harrison exploded in 1841, killing three people, and the Eagle, in 1854, also started on fire. Six lives were lost in this one.
A more recent sinking and fire took place on the City of Eufaula steamboat. She was tied up at Neals Landing when a fire, which started in her cargo, burned the lines loose and she drifted four miles downriver before she sank at Mile Marker 20. No one lost their life.

By boat: Mile Marker 24 on the Florida side (left going upstream)

Launching here is right on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. There is a long, gradual ramp and the water is fairly deep. However there is no pier to tie up to while you park your truck and trailer, but there are sturdy trees within a short distance. Also, there is the current of the river to contend with. It is best to have a buddy along to help with launching here. Bathroom facilities are very clean and camping for tent and RV is available.
